Distraction’s roots are in San Francisco’s free-spirited hippie movement. In the Spring of 1976, Jim (along with two partners) opened the White Rabbit at 1409 Haight. It was a head shop, plant store, and also sold pet supplies. In May of 1978, Jim opened Pipe Dreams with two other partners at 1512 Haight. Pipe Dreams is now at 1376 Haight, billing itself as San Francisco’s oldest smoke shop, although all the original partners went their separate ways years ago. In June of 1982, Jim opened Distractions as a sole proprietor. The store was gray and black, and sold T-shirts, greeting cards, lighting, wood and metal pipes, and bongs made of plastic. In the mid 80’s Distractions became the first store in California to sell locally hand blown glass pipes. Over the past three decades, Distractions has evolved along with Haight Street. Now a neo-victorian, steampunk, festival wear store, and a former Burning Man ticket outlet, fusing the styles of the past to the impending future.
